Synesis Research Context

Management concepts come and go - but how do you know if you are really moving in the right direction? How can you be sure that both the bottom line and the top line will improve if you introduce new management practices? Unlike most management concepts that have been introduced in the last few decades, the concept of Organizational IQ is based on thorough research rather than just intuition and anecdotal evidence. A long-term study of the worldwide high-tech industry - a multi-million-dollar project conducted at the Stanford Computer Industry Project - has shown that a high Organizational IQ is a major driver of financial success.

The research was based on data from a comprehensive survey of 164 business units of high-tech companies from 17 countries in Asia, North America, and Europe. The data that was gathered covered detailed operational practices in product development, manufacturing, sales, marketing, and service. The survey was a joint project of Stanford University, McKinsey & Company, and Augsburg University. Over the course of the project, 700 interviews with a total of 2,000 managers were conducted to gather data and first-hand experience. Capitalizing on this unique data set, a research team at Stanford University analyzed the key factors of success in the high-tech industry. The team included, among others, Haim Mendelson, the James Irwin Miller Professor of Information Systems at the Stanford Business School, leader of the Technology, Organizations and Markets area at the Stanford Computer Industry Project, co-director of the Stanford Executive Program on Strategic Uses of Information Technology, and Johannes Ziegler, co-founder and CEO of Synesis Inc.
